Rapidly developing technologies and communications are creating societal changes of a scope that has not been seen since the industrial revolution. With people now gaining access to these new technologies on a global scale, we are all becoming more dependent on electronic information. Society on all levels is transforming into an integrated 'Information Society'.

The Global Inventory Project (GIP) - http://www.gip.int - is a site created as a multimedia repository of national and international projects, studies and other initiatives aimed at promoting and utilizing the resources of the developing Information Society. Launched in 1995, this G7 Pilot Project is coordinated by the European Commission and Japan.

The site is a true and totally open online database for all peoples and nations. It ties together the hosts of each of the G7 participants, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., and the United States, as well as hosts for the European Commission and World Bank. Visitors to the site can examine the network's contents using a unique, multi-lingual search engine, and submit descriptions of new projects and studies online. The GIP welcomes the participation of non-G7 countries and international organizations.

Furthermore, the site helps build interactive communities and alliances. In the Forum, users can post and respond to messages from each other in a newsgroup-type environment. The Conference Room is a real-time chat area where users can meet and concurrently discuss Information Society topics. These features allow for the easy, worldwide exchange of ideas and information for both learning and doing business.
