Diary - Vann Cherokee Wildlife Sanctuary, Debby Moore - Park Ranger

In September 2006, I approached the property owner and asked if he would give me one year to raise the $1.2 million dollars that would make this property mine, for the critters, and the hundreds of Indian spirits who found 'a place to be' in a vision I had recently. A place to be, where you are wanted, is what a sanctuary is meant to be. The morning after my vision of hundreds of Indians peacefully coming onto the land, I went outside, and they are still here.

February '07 - The moisture is wonderful for the orchards. I planted winter wheat for the deer, and other critters. But it is also under the 8 inches of snow and ice. That is why my feed bill has jumped to $35.00 a week. I could feed more, unfortunately, I have no income, still 8 years from retirement. I really need some financial contributions to make the dream come true.

March 1, 2007 - planted 2 acres of crocas, acquired free. Next year I can harvest tbe saffron from the crocas flowers.

March 5, 2007 - planted 12'x10' donated monkey grass. As the monkey grass spreads, in future years I can sell plugs.

***March 15, 2007 UPDate***I planted 5 pounds of clover for the deer. Cost $20.00. I also planted onion sets around the intended garden. Hotbed gardens have another 47 trees to be removed. I have already cut 26 trees to plant lettuce greens.April 1, 2007 - property owner delivered two chicken coops. Plan is to put these on a trailor, and to move up and down the rows of orchard tree groves. Also need the nitrogen for the hot beds.

April 7, 2007 - paid $200. to have 47 trees removed from the hotbed gardens.

April 9, 2007 - harvested 50 pounds of morel mushrooms. Enjoyed a lovely dinner of fresh Morel Morsels. I will look for local market.

April 9, 2007 - begin jourey for a solar tractor. This beautiful farm land, and wild life sanctuary, is in the middle of the city. Very Rare these days. Every one talks' green', but were it not for the property owner saving the land from becoming a trailor park by his purchase almost a decade ago, the critters would long be gone. The deer books say deer don't usually live when they are relocated by governments.

There are all the facilities, and tanks to operate farm equipment with petroleum products. I seriously doubt if the city would allow me to have a fuel truck fill the above ground storage tanks. Besides, I have a deep passion to become exclusively solar. I have read much, and attended classes instructing how to construct solar pannels. I believe I have an attena in my mind, drawing all the latest on solar to me via magazines, books, and of course the web. I need a solar tractor, and a solar generator.

April 21, 2007 - $300 contract to have Gourd Trellis, Hop Trellis, and three solar drying racks built. Already have customer for the hops.

May 2007 designed and had manufactured. Labor costs $400.00 - Materials recycled from carpenter scraps, & other recycled cement bricks, wire, windows.

May 2007 - Contracted the building of a gourd house - gourd house growing - inside gourd house in August 2007 east, west, south

May 2007 - Contracted the building of a solar dehydrator - especially useful for drying herb garden - takes 24 hours to dry - gets very hot.

In 2006, I had to remove three feet of water from the celler, cleared land for occupation. Land is severely covered with poison ivy. I am so allergic to posion ivy. Poison Ivy has put me in the hospital three times in my life. Bad Medicine for the Park Ranger.

July 2007 - cleared more land for growing pumpkins, watermelon, cantalope. Now brings the number of trees cut (or cleared) to 356. Many many more sapplings to go. Ten years worth.

July 2007, located Jewell Weed Seed to help me control poison ivy. Instructions to plant next spring.

July 2007, using solar dehydrator, processed yellow squash, zucchini, cilantro, parsley, lambs quarters. Harvested about three pounds of potatoes, and three pounds of onions. Strange growing season. Late 3 day freeze in May.

August 2007, watching things grow. Finished painting and putting roof on motor cycle closet. Having to water daily, takes five hours. Truly enjoy watching the animals coming to water.
