Wish List: Goals & Volunteer's Needed: Vann Cherokee Wildlife Sanctuary, Debby Moore, Park Ranger

A fence so I can have a horse.

Clear south land so I can plant hay for my horse, and wheat for the critters.

• As of mid August '07, I have cut 363 trees. Hundreds more to go, and the orchard needs trimming.

Plow between tree rows. Prune dead branches. Gather debris for regular trash collection service.

• Owner had a worker remove 40 tons of scrap metal that has been dumped on the ground in April. Helped a lot, but only a small dent in the debris.

Harvest orchards April through August.

• No harvest in 2007. Trees in full bloom were damaged by late May freeze when the temperature remained at 20 degrees for three days.

Plant garden, and black diamond water melons.

• Planted water melons twice. For six weeks June '07, it rained every single day, all day long. No sun. Of a couple of dozen plants, mid August, there are only two melons, the size of baseballs. There are no cantaloupes. Presently, I see in various sizes about eight pumpkins.

Fencing to keep deer from agriculture.

• Practiced all the suggestions in the deer books. The deer ate half of the corn. Installed Invisible Fencing, was working well on the deer, when the racoons ate the last half of the corn. I believe corn is going to require a enclosed cage to survive.
• As of mid August, the deer, and other critters, have not bothered the pumpkin, cantaloupe, water melon patch. The gourds in the gourd house also seem not to be tempting.
• The winter squash was tasted by the deer in mid July. I re-read the deer book, and have kept a radio playing as loud as possible. Luckily I am in the middle of this land, so no neighbors are bothered by noise. As of mid August, this is working, but the winter squash is just fulling getting ripe..

Build solar panels for energy - goal one every ten acres.

Obtain solar tractor.

Rehabilitation of two small trailors to use as guest cottages for volunteers, and contributors.

Attend environmental events to promote the Vann Cherokee Wildlife Sanctuary.

Find enough money to purchase and operate this land.
